Police in the Indonesian province of Papua have given three days for an assailant to come forward before sending in a team to hunt the offender.
Inspector Yotje Mende says the assailant killed two of the police's Mobile Brigade.
The Jakarta Post reports him saying he has given enough time for a surrender, before his fully-equipped team of 100 personnel would be deployed.
Inspector Mende says he has stressed to his team that it would not be an act of vengeance.
He says the officers who were killed had been assisting local residents to prepare for Christmas when they were callously attacked.
