Fiji's foreign minister says yesterday's courtesy call to his Solomon Islands counterpart was the first step in reopening negotiations into a long-running air dispute.

Ratu Inoke Kubuabola met with Milner Tozaka yesterday afternoon, and is scheduled to meet the Solomon Islands' newly-appointed Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, today.

A row between the nations over air service agreements has prevented the national airlines of both countries from flying between Solomon Islands and Fiji since July last year.

Ratu Inoke says that after several failed attempts, it is hoped the conversation can be restarted and the impasse resolved.

"Foreign Minister Tozaka and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Solomons they will be travelling to Suva next week to meet with our minister for civil aviation and hopefully this impasse could be resolved."
