Bilitaki probe raised in Fiji Parliament

3:17 pm on 10 February 2015

Fiji's Minister of Defence Timoci Natuva has told Parliament police involved in the arrest of Josefa Bilitaki didn't have the proper papers on them.

The songwriter complained last year he'd been beaten during his arrest following his alleged abusive text messages to the Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama.

The Director of Public Prosecutions later closed the case after reviewing the evidence.

In Parliament this morning the opposition asked whether the military was involved in the beating.

Mr Natuva said police are still investigating the circumstances of the arrest.

"Also note that there was no beating conducted. The DPP has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to proceed to court on a charge of assault and therefore there would be no further action."

Mr Natuva says he will update Parliament on the matter when he receives an update from the police.
