Longliner runs aground in American Samoa

3:18 pm on 23 May 2015

An investigation is underway in American Samoa after a longliner ran aground in bad weather this morning.

The 22 people on board the vessel made it to shore in life rafts and have received medical attention.

The Coast Guard says rough seas made the rescue effort very difficult.

The Commissioner of Public Safety, Save Liuato Tuitele, says he doesn't know the crew members' nationalities, and authorities are looking for a translator.

The Coast Guard is now working out how to offload any dangerous substances on board the vessel.
