A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Solomon Islands this afternoon and was felt by people in the capital, Honiara, who say the shaking was strong enough to rock buildings.

The tremor was shallow at 33 kilometres but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is not predicting a tsunami.
