Cook Islands are in the box seat to win the first stage of Oceania Football World Cup qualifying, after beating Samoa 1-0 in Nuku'alofa.

Taylor Saghabi's fourth goal of the tournament six minutes before half-time was enough to give Cook Islands the maximum six points after two rounds of matches.

A draw in tomorrow's final round clash with American Samoa would be enough to secure top spot, and a place at next year's Oceania Nations Cup, but coach Drew Sherman says their tactics will remain the same.

"We executed really well. The boys again worked tirelessly - they've been absolutely superb in the first two games - so they've got to make sure they carry that on and see the job through. We've got to deal with fatigue, after two pretty intense games, and make sure that we finish the job. Listen, we're not going to go and play for a draw - we need to impose ourselves and go to win the game".

Meanwhile American Samoa kept their qualification hopes alive after beating hosts Tonga 2-1, and along with defending champions Samoa remain a chance of finishing atop the standings.
