New Aust diplomat off to Nauru

4:48 pm on 26 November 2015

Australia is replacing its high commissioner in Nauru, with career diplomat, John Donnelly, to take up the post next month.

The Australian foreign minister, Julie Bishop, says Australia values Nauru's contribution to deterring illegal migration and combat people smuggling, including through offshore processing.

Australia pays Nauru tens of millions of dollars annually for hosting its asylum seeker detention camps and for those that have been officially declared refugees.
