A conference on self-determination for American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands and Guam is underway for the first time in more than 20 years.

The panel in Washington DC is hosted by the US Department of the Interior and aims to encourage a discussion on self-determination at both the federal and territorial level.

The discussion host and Assistant Secretary for Insular Affairs, Esther Kia'aina, said it's important for the younger generation to learn about self-determination and to understand their rights.

"I encourage all those who are interested in self-determination to continue to advance such a discussion in your respective territories, your legislatures, homes, villages and communities."

Esther Kia'aina said her office is considering a technical assistance grant for the three territories that will try to help educate people about the issue.
