A member of the ruling majority in French Polynesia's assembly has been charged with abuse of public funds.

The territory's daily newspaper said Felix Faatau was charged after being questioned last month over a range of deals relating to his time as mayor of Huahine.

Among other things, he is alleged to have pocketed money which an accommodation manager paid to the local council.

He is also alleged to have given a council-owned bus and a driver to his daughter's business which ran school buses whose bills were then met by the council.
