Health authorities concerned with a huge spike in the number of sexually transmitted infections in French Polynesia have launched a prevention campaign.
Between 2014 and 2015 there has been a 300 percent increase in syphillis while gonorrhea and chlamydia cases have doubled.
A statement from the Ministry of Health said the increase in syphillis is of particular concern with 100 cases diagnosed between January and May this year.
The statement said the disease had been relatively non-existent a decade ago.
The campaign will see more awareness activities conducted on STIs and prevention methods as well as measures to increase access to condoms.
Testing sites have also been set up in health centres across the territory to provide confidential screening and treatment of STIs.
A public awareness campaign will also be launched tomorrow in conjunction with the Heiva I Tahiti festival.
