The criminal court in French Polynesia has given a man a five-year jail sentence - three of the years suspended - for burning a police car.

The 36-year-old man broke into the police compound on the island Taha'a last July because a few weeks earlier police had discovered and destroyed his marijuana plants.

According to Tahiti-infos, he used petrol to light the fire which spread and also burnt some of an officer's belongings.

Before the trial, he had been held in prison for six months.

He expressed remorse but said selling home-grown marijuana was his family's only source of income.
