The ADB's Stephen Groff said the plan was to ensure 98 percent of households in the capital had access to clean water and for 4500 more households to have access to reticulated sewerage by 2023.

The bank has also signed a deal with the Green Climate Fund to provide a US$31m grant to Fiji which will help deal with increasing salt water intrusion into Suva's water supply.

The agreements were signed during climate change discussions taking place in Fiji this week.

Fiji's Climate Change Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said the programme's a big step forward for climate adaptation work in Fiji and a sign of confidence in Fiji's ability to manage serious infrastructure development.

The government expected the project to be completed in July 2025 and represents a total investment of US$406m.
