The petition was filed by the runner-up in the seat, independent candidate Lohia Samuel, over alleged breach of laws by Electoral Commission officials.

In dismissing the case, Justice David Cannings said the petitioner failed to identify which laws had been breached and other essential information.

Speaking afterwards, Sir Mekere expressed relief that the petition case was over, and said it meant he could now devote all his energy to working for his constituents.

"The law has been enforced rightly but it's a great relief," said Sir Mekere, who is in opposition.

"It's over now so we go to the art of governing and helping the people of North West."

Judge Cannings order the petitioner to pay for the legal costs of Sir Mekere as well as the second defendant, PNG's Electoral Commission, a sum of $800 USD each.
