Samoa Observer reported that, according to the Deputy Commissioner of Prisons and Corrections Services Levaopolo Rosa Mene, if construction continues at this rate prisoners will be relocated by December.

Levaopolo Rosa Mene said the prison was 80 percent completed.

Levao said the biggest challenge was bad weather, with Cyclone Gita delaying the project.

She told media during a site visit last week the new prison should house between 500-600 prisoners, including women.

Levao said the capacity in Tafa'igata at the moment was more than 367 prisoners, including women.

Another phase of the project will include security fencing, a watch tower and holding cells for custodial remands.
