An attack on a doctor in Papua New Guinea could lead to doctors stopping work.

Last weekend Dr Dean Wahemberi, a registrar of the Ear Nose and Throat Clinic at the Port Moresby General hospital, was allegedly assaulted by drunk soldiers in a suburb in the city.

The doctor is now being cared for at the hospital and has damage to an eye and his sight is under threat, his nose is broken and he is complaining of severe headaches.

The president of the National Doctors Association, James Naipao, in a statement has called on the commander of the PNGDF to round up the soldiers involved and charge them.

Dr Naipao said if there is no action within 10 days then there will be a stop work by staff at the Port Moresby General Hospital and members of the National Doctors Association around the country

PNG Police and the Defence Force have said they will investigate the matter.
