Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury says the federal government in Australia won't change the goods and service tax despite calls from independent MPs.
Fairfax Media reported on Thursday that federal independent MPs Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott want a review of GST to help pay for future social programmes and also reform benefits to business and the middle class.
But Mr Bradbury said the government had been very clear on the GST.
"We do not support an increase in the rate and we do not support a broadening in the base," he told Sky News on Thursday.
GST is 10%. AAP reports the tax covers about 60% of consumption, but it does not apply to sectors such as health, education and fresh food.
Mr Oakeshott said GST had to become more efficient to cover important spending.
