Online retailers told commission is watching

Online retailers are advised to deliver on their promises or they could face prosecution by the Commerce Commission.

The commission says it has already received its first complaints about Christmas gifts bought online that had not turned up by the promised date.

It will keep watch on retailers who compare prices and make claims their products are made in New Zealand.

With increasing numbers of shoppers heading online to buy gifts, the commission is warning online retailers that they and their staff should be aware of the Fair Trading Act and the rules about giving accurate information.

The Act prohibits false and misleading information being provided to consumers.

The Commission says it receives more than 10,000 complaints per year and around 70% are possible breaches of the Fair Trading Act.
