Official figures show the food price index rose 0.2 percent in June from the month before.

There had been a 2.4 percent increase in May.

Among the bigger price hikes were meat, butter and soft drinks.

Fruit and vegetable prices fell slightly in June after skyrocketing in May because of wet weather, but avocados and tomatoes remained expensive, and kumara hit record highs.

The annual rate of growth in food prices eased marginally to three percent.
