An Auckland firm that builds robots to inspect underground pipes has been sold to an American company.

CleanFlow Systems, which has been in business for 16 years, is merging with Redzone Robotics, a leading designer of wastewater inspection technologies in the United States.

General manager Phil Anderson says the market for pipe inspecting robots is still in its infancy, but he believes it has massive global potential for growth.

He says the deal involves New Zealand becoming the company's hub for research and development.

CleanFlow Systems was supported by Massey University's business innovation centre.
