The Christchurch central city rebuild is one step closer to getting started, with the announcement the unit spearheading it has a short-list of preferred contractors.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority's Central City Development Unit was created to come up with a blueprint for the central city.

It was given 100 days until 27 July to come up with the plan.

Director Warwick Isaacs says four companies have been selected and all have significant international credentials.

The contractors will be chosen by the end of Wednesday and will be expected to start work the next day.
