Request for insurance tribunal sent to minister

Christchurch City Council has confirmed that an urgent request to set up an insurance tribunal and advocacy service has been sent to Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee.

Last week the council voted unanimously to support establishing the services to speed up earthquake-related claims.

The move followed pleas to city councillors by homeowners who have been struggling with claim delays.

The council says letters have now been sent to Mr Brownlee and the Office of the Insurance Ombudsman.

It says council staff have also been asked to urgently report back on options for the advocacy service.
