EQC promises more staff in Canterbury

The Earthquake Commission says it will have a much bigger presence in Canterbury within a fortnight.

About 100 people working for EQC are inspecting the damage caused by a 7.1-magnitude quake that hit the region on 4 September.

Those numbers have led Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker to question when the commission will have a significant contingent in the region clearing the inspection backlog.

But EQC operations manager Doug Bent told a public forum in Christchurch on Tuesday night that it hoped 300 more staff would be there within two weeks.

EQC has now received 52,000 claims following the quake, he says.
