Off to see how San Francisco recovered and rebuilt

A group of Christchurch city councillors and businesspeople will fly to the United States on Sunday to see how San Francisco recovered from its devastating earthquake in 1989.

Five councillors and six business leaders who work in construction, communications, transport and finance will spend six days in the rebuilt city, gathering knowledge and ideas for Christchurch's earthquake recovery.

The group will meet experts on a variety of topics, including urban design, building codes and ways of restoring business confidence.

San Francisco's mayor, Ed Lee, says support from other countries was essential when his city began its rebuild, and he hopes to help Christchurch in the same way.
