A temporary liquor ban comes into force in two suburbs of Christchurch on Thursday.
Christchurch City Council says the six-month ban was requested by the police who have been dealing with increased drunken behaviour and violence in the suburbs of Riccarton and Ilam since the city centre was cordoned off.
People who breach the ban could face a fine of up to $20,000.
Liquor bans are also being considered in the suburb of Merivale and the township of Akaroa.
