Kairaki Beach residents angry land in red zone

Upset residents at Kairaki Beach near Kaiapoi plan to challenge the Government's decision to zone their land red.

They are demanding to know why their area has been put in the worst zone and believe they can prove it is safe to build on.

Kairaki Beach was badly affected by the earthquake on 4 September last year.

But since then, the Waimakariri District Council has rebuilt the sewage and water systems and they were not damaged during the quakes on 22 February and 13 June this year.

So it came as a surprise to residents last week when they learned they would be expected to abandon their homes and move elsewhere.

Resident Tim Stephenson says they have answers to the problems raised by engineers who say the land is too unstable.

Mr Stephenson says residents also expect to be able to see all the information on their land held by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority.
