Damaged buildings in Sydenham now gone

One of the suburbs worst hit in the Christchurch earthquakes is on the way to recovery.

Most of the badly damaged brick buildings in Sydenham have been cleared away and the cordons are largely gone.

Even before the earthquakes Sydenham was suffering, with many of its aging brick buildings run down and empty.

Now, whole blocks have been demolished and cleared away.

Sydenham and Lyttelton are the first suburbs that Christchurch City Council is developing master plans for to help them recover.

Public workshops were held in June to gather ideas and a public meeting will be held on Tuesday for the community to give further feedback.

A draft plan will be developed and presented to the council later this year.
