New figures show Canterbury's economy is improving strongly, with the region's ports and airport leading the way.
Data released by the Ministry of Economic Development every six months show the two businesses hit a combined two-year high of $950 million in September, increasing by a third since the same time last year.
The Christchurch data has been compiled monthly since the February earthquake.
Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says since June, the number of locals receiving unemployment benefits has decreased by 12%.
Mr Brownlee says this is another indicator that Canterbury's economic health is improving as it recovers from the earthquakes, with workers in high demand.
He says another key pillar of growth will be strong and innovative businesses selling products overseas.
