Push for riverside park on quake-damaged land

A group calling for areas of Christchurch's residential red zone to become a park wants the idea included in the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority's plan for the city.

Much of the land which has to be abandoned due to earthquake damage borders the Avon River.

The Avon-Otakaro Network wants that land turned into a park.

One of the group's organisers, Evan Smith, says there is a lot of public support for the concept.

He says the group has been meeting with the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority about having the idea included in its recovery plan for the city.

Mr Smith says that's the next critical next step toward making the concept a reality.

The group is also collecting signatures for a petition to be presented to Parliament early in the new year.
