Sex abuser de-registration waits for legal process to finish

8:48 am on 15 September 2012

It will be at least two months before a Far North teacher who has admitted abusing pupils will be struck off the teachers' register.

Pamapuria school deputy principal James Parker has pleaded guilty to 49 sexual offences against boys and has been remanded in custody.

He still appears on the register with full registration until 2014.

Teachers Council director Peter Lind says only a disciplinary tribunal can de-register a teacher and it waits until after a trial so the police evidence and the judge's sentencing notes can be included in the hearing.

Mr Lind says the council can order an interim suspension of registration, but there's no reason to in this case as James Parker is in custody so there is no risk of offending against children or young people.

James Parker will be sentenced in November.
