A report on how on a World War II shell made its way onto an international flight from Vanuatu to Auckland could be up to three months away.

A tourist who had been diving to wartime wrecks in Vanuatu flew into New Zealand on an Air Vanuatu flight with the suspected mortar round in his hand luggage.

He was stopped at Customs, and military bomb disposal experts were called in to secure the shell.

Air Vanuatu is seeking a report from Airports Vanuatu Limited Security, which screens all departing passengers.

Vanuatu airport says it is working closely with Auckland airport and the Civil Aviation Authority as the investigation continues.
