A father and son charged with assaulting a police officer in Kawhia have reappeared in court.
Jack Maikuku, 49 and Jackie Maikuku, 19, appeared at Te Awamutu District Court on Monday. Both face charges of assault and resisting arrest.
The men are alleged to have assaulted Constable Perry Griffen on 11 January as he was trying to arrest Jackie Maikuku for an earlier offence.
The incident took place at the wharf in the Waikato town as a large crowd looked on.
Kawhia's sole police officer had tried to pepper-spray Jackie Maikuku in an attempt to subdue him, and other people are alleged to have got involved and attacked the officer.
A 15-year-old has been referred to the Youth Court and charges against a 21-year-old were dropped.
In court, Mr Maikuku Snr was remanded on bail, while his son will remain in custody.
No pleas have been entered and both will be back in court in March for a post-committal hearing.
