Police were called to an altercation between a man and a woman at a flat in East Street on Tuesday night and say when they arrived they found a friend giving Sean Verna first aid.

Ambulance staff arrived, but were unable to save the stabbed man.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says police are continuing to piece events of Tuesday night together and still want to talk to any witnesses.

A scene examination is continuing at the Lower Hutt property.

The 29-year-old woman will appear in court on Thursday.

A man in a nearby flat who said he was the dead man's father told Radio New Zealand's reporter his son was a patched Mongrel Mob member but was a gentle person and father to an 18-month-old boy.
