Free school milk programme gets fridges

Whiteware manufacturer Fisher & Paykel is joining Fonterra's free milk in schools programme.

Fonterra will begin delivering free milk to all primary schools that register an interest this year, following a successful pilot at 120 Northland schools last year. The programme will start in Southland in April.

The milk provided is 180ml packages of Ultra Heat Treated (UHT) low fat milk. On its website Fonterra says that using UHT (long life) milk gives schools more flexibility over delivery times and storage.

Fisher & Paykel will provide Fonterra with specially designed fridges at a discount.

A Fonterra spokesperson said feedback from the Northland pilot showed the importance of providing fridges that suited the school's environment.

It's expected that by the end of Term 1 next year all schools who want to take part in the programme will have access to milk every school day.
