Dangerous expectations about sex from online porn

A sex educator says easily available online pornography is giving young people dangerous expectations about sex.

Liz Walker, who founded a youth wellbeing project in Australia, says the behaviour of a group of young Auckland men who have been bragging about sex with teenage girls highlights the gaps in sex education programmes.

She says teenagers are receiving damaging messages about body image and sexual violence from online pornography.

Ms Walker says schools need to make sex education much more comprehensive to help counter those myths.

That includes teaching young people about emotional issues such as respect, consent and personal boundaries.

Ms Walker says many programmes at present focus only on messages such as using contraception.
