They were called to the Porirua man's house by the neighbours yesterday afternoon after complaints about the smell, and investigators are working to uncover what had happened to the man.

Police said the man was yet to be identified, but that the body has now been removed from the house for a post-mortem.

They have spoken to another person who was in the house.

Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Ferguson said, "The immediate focus of the investigation is to examine the scene and the body, after which we should have a better idea of what has occurred."

He said it was important for police to take a "cautious approach" at this stage.

Mr Ferguson said the body was quite deteriorated, which suggested it had been there for several weeks.

The death remains unexplained at this stage.
