Mathew Kidman, 35, allegedly removed the bracelet early on Friday morning and had been avoiding the police and his family since.

The police said he was arrested about 6.30pm in the Wellington suburb of Northland.

They said a woman, who was with him at the time, escaped in a vehicle, but was arrested shortly after a police chase.

They had earlier described Mr Kidman, who had a history of evading police, as potentially dangerous and said they believed he had access to firearms.

Corrections Minister Judith Collins earlier said a judge made the wrong call releasing him on electronic monitoring, given his history.

She said about 0.5 to 1 percent of all people monitored electronically removed the bracelets.
