A strong 4.7 earthquake struck the top of the South Island early this morning.

The quake was centered 35 kilometres east of the Marlborough town of Seddon, at a depth of 13 kilometres.
Recorded just before 20 to one, it was followed by several minor aftershocks.
It was also felt in Wellington, and the second quake to shake the capital this week, after a 4.4 quake on Tuesday night.
