Bushfires in Hawke's Bay that broke out at the beginning of the week have now been contained, the fire service says.

The four fires that made up the combined fire area burnt 422 hectares and destroyed one house.

Rural Fire Authority national response co-ordinator Gary Lockyer said it took 13 rural fire crews, six helicopters, 17 fire engines, three water tankers, and four defence force crews to help extinguish the blaze.

Mr Lockyer says the national incident management team and extra firefighters were likely to stand down and hand over to the local team tomorrow afternoon.

He thanked local residents for their cooperation at such an unsettling time and all the people who worked long and hard to fight the fires.
