A "moderate" 5.1 magnitude earthquake has struck near Gisborne this afternoon.

The earthquake struck at 3.08pm today and was centred about 25km south-east of Matawai, at a depth of 38km, according to GeoNet's latest report.
The agency initially rated the intensity of the earthquake as strong, but later downgraded it to moderate.
It received more than 700 reports of people feeling the shake within 20 minutes.
