The 24-year-old New Plymouth man was diving alone.

Police said the man's family had been notified.

Senior Sergeant David Houston thanked those who helped in the search, including volunteer Coastguard units, Surf Life Saving, and Wellington LandSAR.

"Community support from local boaties, divers, and business owners was exceptional.

"This is an incredibly sad time for the man's family and friends and we are thankful to be able to find him and bring them some form of closure."

His family called the police on Monday when it got late and he had not contacted them.

Yesterday searchers found clothing and some fishing gear, while his car was on the beach where he left it.

Earlier, Mr Houston said many people dived in the area, but conditions were a bit different on Monday.

"The further you go offshore, a couple of hundred metres off, then it's relatively quite tidal. At the time there was a strong tide pushing north, and you obviously get a south going tide as well."
