A search was launched on 11 October after a crew member onboard the Otakou fishing vessel did not report for duty that morning as expected. But the search operation was suspended due to poor weather and the Otakou returned to Nelson the next day.

Police are working to establish the identity of the person.

A post portem examination has been carried out and there will be further forensic testing through DNA.

A Sealord spokesperson earlier said the company had started its own internal investigation into what happened.
