Starship to review security after mother takes baby

5:03 pm on 24 October 2010

Auckland District Health Board is to review security at Starship hospital after a drug-addicted woman took off with her baby soon after giving birth.

The incident happened on Saturday evening.

The woman left the hospital with her baby about 90 minutes after it was born.

She was located in South Auckland about an hour later.

The DHB says the woman is a patient at Te Whetu Tawera, Auckland Hospital's mental health unit.

The board says it's not unusual for drug-affected people to leave the hospital but says this incident is serious because a newborn was involved.

The board says it is treating the matter seriously and will review security.
