Police seek review of charge over hunting death

5:03 pm on 29 October 2010

Police investigating the shooting of a Lower Hutt teacher are seeking legal advice on whether a more serious charge can be laid against the hunter involved.

Rosemary Ives was shot at a Department of Conservation campsite near Turangi at Labour Weekend.

A 25-year-old Hamilton man has been charged with careless use of a firearm causing death.

Police say the charge has historically been preferred in most hunting-related deaths.

However, they say because the circumstances around Ms Ives's death differ from other hunting-related deaths, it is appropriate to have the charge reviewed by the Crown solicitor.

Because that review is unlikely to be completed before the accused's first court appearance next week, police say a two-week remand will be sought.
