Patches proving popular in prisons

8:30 pm on 16 March 2011

The Corrections Department says hundreds of prisoners are using patches and lozenges to help them quit smoking, before the habit is banned altogether.

From 1 July, inmates won't be allowed to smoke in prison or have lighters or matches.

It's estimated that roughly two-thirds of the prison muster, or about 5600 inmates, are smokers.

Corrections says 1800 of them are using nicotine-replacement patches and lozenges.

A Prison Service spokesperson, Dr Brendan Anstiss, says the uptake of both has been steadily increasing, which shows that prisoners are being proactive.

In addition, Corrections says it has distributed 300 copies of a quit-smoking book to prison libraries for inmates to read.
