Police say a clearer picture is starting to emerge of events surrounding the death of Lachan Kelly-Tumarae.

The 19-year-old was fatally shot by officers near Fernhill, west of Hastings, in the early hours of Monday morning.

Detective Superintendent Andy Lovelock says police have now spoken to the occupants of a grey van seen in the suburb of Maraenui at about the same time as the first police interaction with the victim.

He says interviews have been conducted with all police staff and others involved in the incident, but it will be several weeks before the results of forensic tests are available.

At the invitation of the family, police say, on Thursday a group of senior staff visited the Omahu Marae in Hastings where Mr Kelly-Tumarae's body was lying.
