More inquiries into Auckland Airport drug bust

9:09 am on 28 April 2011

The police say there will be further investigations into a big drugs bust at Auckland Airport, in which 10 Malaysians posing as a "tour group" were seized.

Eight men and two women from Malaysia are in custody accused of trying to bring methamphetamine into the country in their shoes.

They were arrested on Tuesday and appeared in court on Wednesday.

The Customs Department's investigations manager, Mark Day, says they did not have the normal traits of a tour group.

Mr Day says their listed occupations, itineraries and the amount of luggage they had raised suspicions, and they also could not walk properly in their shoes.

The total street value of the haul is estimated to be as much as $10 million.

Customs says it's the largest number of alleged drug couriers caught in a single incident at a New Zealand border.

Assistant Police Commissioner Malcolm Burgess told Morning Report there is more work to be done. He says it will involve the police, Customs and overseas authorities.
