Civil Defence prepared for more tornadoes

6:16 am on 6 May 2011

Civil Defence says it is sufficiently prepared to deal with any more tornadoes in Auckland or elsewhere in the North Island on Friday.

MetService is forecasting the kind of conditions in which tornadoes can form, with thundery showers due to cross the north and west of the North Island.

Auckland Civil Defence says someone is on duty 24/7 in case an emergency happens.

Controller Clive Manley says a group is available to swing into action if needed.

He says it is virtually impossible to predict where a tornado will strike, so people can't expect a warning.

Mr Manley says people should get as low as possible and take shelter if they see a tornado.
