Bridgecorp director 'could reapply for legal aid'

The Criminal Bar Association says former Bridgecorp director Rod Petricevic will be able to reapply for legal aid even after his trial ends.

Mr Petricevic's has been denied taxpayer funded legal help to defend fraud charges relating to the finance company's collapse because he has access to a family trust.

On Tuesday, his bid for a stay in proceedings failed at the Auckland High Court.

Justice Venning told Mr Petricevic he can reapply for legal aid if assets in the family trust decrease, and that he understands a fresh claim has already been lodged.

The chairman of the Criminal Bar Association's legal aid subcommittee, John Anderson, says more applications could follow.

He says defendants can reapply for legal aid if their financial situation changes and can do so up until 15 working days after being acquitted or sentenced.
