Ash cloud not heading to NZ, this time

11:24 am on 28 July 2011

Ash from the Chilean volcano that disrupted flights last month is again hovering over the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, but flights in and out of New Zealand will not be affected.

The meteorological manager at New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority, Peter Lechner, says the ash cloud is sitting in the atmosphere at around 10,000 feet - not high enough to travel across the Pacific Ocean.

Flights in Argentina had been disrupted for a second day but in neighbouring Uruguay, air traffic was back to normal after dozens of fligths were cancelled or delayed on Tuesday.

The Puyehue volcano has been disrupting air travel intermittently since the beginning of June, when it began erupting for the first time in five decades.
