Survey shows many not interested in Rugby World Cup

10:49 pm on 2 August 2011

An online survey suggests only a third of New Zealanders are enthusiastic about the Rugby World Cup and many are concerned about the amount of disruption it will bring.

The survey by UMR Research polled 850 New Zealanders between 29 June and 20 July.

It indicates 35% of New Zealanders are not looking forward to the tournament, 37% are looking forward to it, while 29% are neutral.

Enthusiasm is particularly low in earthquake-hit Canterbury, with just 16% of those surveyed looking forward to the event.

Forty-one percent of people surveyed believe the Rugby World Cup will be disruptive, with only about half that number (23%) disagreeing.

The survey's margin of error is plus or minus 3.4%.

The Rugby World Cup begins in Auckland on 9 September.
